The Zaky is the only product specifically developed to have the scent of mom, so it help babies bond with their mothers even when they are away from each other. It is the only product designed to stay with the baby to give him/her comfort and a sense of protection when he/she changes environments (hospital, car, home, sitter, child-care, etc). Several things were the inspiration for the Zaky:
- The need to bond parents with the babies when they cannot be together.
- The resourcefulness of the nurses as they rolled towels, used stuffed animals and improvised other items to provide babies with boundaries, comfort, a sense of security and support when they are not held or touched. The items used were not very efficient, and some even created a safety hazard to the baby as they could not be washed. None involved the mother in the care of her child.
- The knowledge that hands help babies – it can be seen in the monitors - and that leaving the scent with the baby gives reassurance, a sense of protection and comfort.
- The need to provide the babies with something familiar and constant. An item that would help the babies decrease the association of touch with pain, and movement with stress. The Zaky provides boundaries and a soothing touch that also helps in the transition between environments.
